About me

My work is about documenting, visualizing, and expressing the light, reflection, and beauty in nature.  I am a landscape artist, my practice is grounded in landscape, seascape, and more specifically about water.  While working in oil paint, ceramics, collage, and other various materials, I  depict and reconstruct the natural world around me.

With my preferred medium of oil paint, I create representational images while sitting on the beach with all my supplies, and myself, right in the sand.  These works are sometimes small, just subtle moments of the environment.  Other times they are much larger investigations.  Taking photos helps me focus on many specific things, from the distant horizon to what is right under my feet.  I spend a lot of time in my car, often with watercolors trying to capture the shore in the wintertime, or simply driving around, observing my surroundings.

Reflecting back on my studio practice, I aspire to interpret more deeply my outdoor explorations using various mediums.  Sometimes it is ceramics to create gestural objects that mimic the designs naturally made in the thick marshy mud, or the waves in the shallow bay.  It may be rice paper and acrylic sheets that I manipulate and bend to luminate the reflections when they are introduced to light.  Sometimes I use color studies, taken in real time of a sunset or a sunrise, to capture the brilliant colors created in nature.

Within all the ways I approach artmaking and how I choose to explore the phenomenon of nature, there is always something that remains the same- a representation of the beautiful, a poetic moment of calmness.
